Meet Your Mentors
Alyssa Mairanz
Hi, I’m Alyssa and I created Adulting in the Real World to help you make independence easier, achieving a successful and less stressful life. Even with very helpful parents, I still felt LOST, SCARED, and STRESSED about transitioning from youth into young adulthood. My friends were feeling the same way and some of them had ZERO help from their parents.
Let me tell you, I would do A LOT differently if I could go back and give my 18 year-old self some advice.
With family financial support in the rear-view, one of my biggest struggles was understanding how to become financially independent. Once I figured out how to make my own money, I still had no money management skills and spent more than I could afford. Money became a huge stressor that kept me up at night, and it took a long time to figure it all out. I wished for an easy to understand cheat sheet for life, but couldn’t find one.
“Look at me – young, dumb, and ready to waste some money. Exciting times.”
On top of always worrying about going broke, I forgot how many things there were to manage to take care of myself. I needed to make my own doctor’s appointments, but I didn’t. For years. Something as simple as requesting my pediatrician’s office to send my records to a new doctor had me avoiding an annual physical for most of my young adulthood. Fast forward ten years and most of my medical records from my childhood are lost. Thankfully, that lack of care did not leave an impact on my physical health, but I might not have been so lucky.
At 24, I was right out of grad school and working my first adult job – but I didn’t have enough money to cover my expenses. I couldn’t afford rent and ended up back at home living with my parents. A couple of years passed before I became a fully licensed therapist, and as more doors opened for me, I realized “I have to get my shit together, I can’t live with my parents forever!”
It took years of anxiety and confusion to figure out this adulthood thing.
Finally in my late 20’s I started my own business. My dream career was at my fingertips! Even now, my friends and I are in our 30’s and so many of them are still navigating the big stuff without any former guidance. I realized how much my experience allowed me to help them and how grateful they were. I started thinking “why not try and help as many people as I can?!” I created Adulting in the Real World to help others learn from my experience and benefit from my hard earned knowledge.
Becoming an adult means something different for everyone, so no matter where you are on the journey to independence, I want to take as much of the anxiety and stress out of it for you as possible.
Emma Giordano
My name is Emma Giordano and I am a 25-year-old Mental Health Counselor. When I’m not working with clients to help manage their mental health, I’m learning to adjust to working full time as a counselor while also juggling personal time, hobbies, finances, and social life. Sound like a lot? It is! Sound familiar? I bet it does. As I’ve gotten a handle on how to be a tried and true grown up, my confidence to help others do the same has grown so much, too.
My journey into adulthood was normal chaos, but also so rewarding and fulfilling. Taking on the role as the “therapist friend” while coping with my own mental health led me to pursue a career as a professional therapist.
I lived at home on Long Island, NY while completing my undergraduate and graduate studies in psychology and clinical mental health counseling. I realized my passion mentoring junior high and high school students about mental wellness, and while interning with the National Eating Disorders Association I realized that counseling is my life’s calling.
I’m passionate about Adulting in the Real World because I know first-hand the difficulty of transitioning from adolescence to adulthood. So here we are: everything I wish I had learned, all in one course you can finish faster than a Netflix binge.
You deserve to get yourself started on the path to crafting your very own successful, satisfying life. Let’s do this!
